Q&A: Mouthwash for Periodontitis?

Question by Tim Osman: Mouthwash for Periodontitis?
I’m looking everywhere. I thought I had Gingivitis, but after seeing what Periodontitis is, I think this is what I have.. My teeth are healthy, but gumlines on some teeth are wayyyy fading, and there is a pocket inbetween two teeth (where one is chipped so stuff gets stuck there easy). Don’t tell me to go to the dentist. I know I need to and I can’t now. I am going nuts. I am looking this stuff up everywhere and everyone says different things and it’s confusing. Some say baking soda is good, some don’t. some say chlorhexidine is good, some don’t. This is driving me nuts. I don’t want to lose my teeth! Any suggestions for me to help contain this until I have the means to go to a dentist?!
COME ON PEOPLE… Thanks for answering, but UHHHHH NOOOOO!!!!! You aren’t supposed to use antiseptic mouthwash or alcohol based mouthwash for this. I don’t need a lecture on what periodonitits is. Just a suggestion for a decent mouthwash to help contain till I see a dentist

Brush your teeth for a full two minutes when you do. Floss, floss, floss. I cannot stress enough about how floss is really going to help you. I had to get a deep cleaning because of that. So brush your teeth and floss. Go to Walmart or your local grocery store and get some mouthwash. Listerine, ACT, any of those. Find a good one. Ask the pharmacy. Good luck!

Question by gigi: chlorhexidine gluconate(peridex) after wisdom teeth extractions?
today was my post op check.some of my concerns were the ugly taste in my mouth/breath,and swelling of one side of my gums.He said they were healining great .It has been only a week, and that the taste was probally caused by all the debris left in my mouth from food, and that i needed to brush because I had alot of bleeding days after they were removed i was scared to brush and did so very lightly.also he had recommended not rinsing fo a few days til my post op.He at first said ok….just start rinsing now w/the salt water…then changed his mind to prescribing me peridex. But with all the negative side affects ive been reading about….i am kinda scared to take it.Is rinsing with the salt water just as effective????

the side effects from chlorhexidine gluconate happen after prolonged use. it is advised not to use it for more than 3 weeks at a time after which you may switch to regular mouthwash for a few weeks before switching back to it at your preference.

Question by YahooBoy2009: What is the best mouth rinse for periodontal disease?
My dentist recommended periodex or a ‘pool water’ rinse.

Best answer:

Answer by Dr. Albert, DDS (UNITED STATES)
PERIDEX,(aka chlorohexidine gluconate 0.12%) is only available by prescription, and is very effective in treating gingivitis and other oral diseases.
I believe he was joking when he said, “pool water”, lol
